Quietly, and with little fanfare, Thatz'A Pizza opened in May in Hampden Twp.
The pizzeria sits in the same shopping complex as the Healthy Grocerat 3800Trindle Road in Hampden Twp.
Owner Kevin Shutt worked for 15 years with the Lio's Pizza Sub Shop in Linglestown. Shortly after the Lio family closed the shop in Linglestown last year, Shutt decided to branch out on his own.
He took over the former Mazzio's Pizza, and after three months of cleaning and remodeling, opened Thatz'A Pizza. The tiny shop boasts several tables and a case filled with specialty pizzas ranging from Hawaiian to meat lovers, buffalo chicken and a bacon cheeseburger.
But its the tomato pie a take on the Philadelphia classic that is quickly becoming a big hit. The square pizza is slathered in San Marzano tomatoes, fresh garlic, parsley, extra virgin olive oil and parmesan cheese.
"It's really hitting good," Shutt said.
The menu also includes appetizers fried ravioli to french fries along with salads such as Italian, Caesar and steak. There are calzones, strombolis, wraps and subs.
Be sure to try the homemade Italian doughnuts called zeppole stuffed with choice of chocolate chips, raspberry or blueberry. They are doughy, warm and sweet and sell for 75 cents a piece.
The shop is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday. It is closed Sunday. Phone is 717-920-1320.
