1. A HIGH-PROFILE TEA PARTY CHALLENGE
Tea party-backed challengers have gone after a number of incumbents nationwide, but few as prominent as House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. Economics professor Dave Brat has waged a lively battle against the well-financed incumbent in the Republican primary in the 7th District.
2. THE OTHER TWO RACES
Former Lt. Gov. Don Beyer is among seven Democratic candidates for the 8th District seat of retiring Rep. Jim Moran in northern Virginia. Republican Rep. Rob Wittman is being challenged by National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation spokesman Anthony Riedel in eastern Virginia's 1st District.
3. NO LIKELY IMPACT ON PARTISAN SPLIT
No matter who wins the three primaries, the results are unlikely to affect the Republicans' 8-3 advantage in Virginia's U.S. House delegation. The 7th and 1st Districts are heavily Republican, and the 8th is a Democratic stronghold.
4. DON'T FORGET YOUR ID
Voters must present valid identification at the polls. Those who do not are allowed to cast a provisional ballot, then take a valid ID to their local registrar's office by Friday to have their vote counted.
